Old Dominion University Named A Conn-Selmer School

Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, is one of the newest universities to be named A Conn-Selmer School.  This program supports the short and long term growth of music performance and education, and increases the institution’s national/international profile as a music school. Old Dominion is positioning itself recruit more high-quality students, obtain more grants and secure a long-term position as a leader in music and music education because of this program.

“We are thoroughly enjoying the benefits of the program, mainly the instruments”, says Alexander R. Treviño, Ph.D., Director of Athletic Bands. “We have started a marching band here at ODU for the first time in its history, and the brass line sounds phenomenal. Our high brass sections blend very well with the King marching trumpets and mellophones, while the baritones provide that dark inner voice that ties it all together.  At the first rehearsal with the new trombones, the low brass section sounded complete.”

Old Dominion University prides itself on being an institution of learning and creativity, a world where the pursuit of knowledge and inspiration never ends, where endless opportunities begin. Their ultimate aim is to produce graduates who can both pursue a successful career, and at the same time become caring and productive citizens in their communities.  The university recognizes that their reputation is based on attracting the finest students into their music performance and music education programs and to offer superior facilities, the best academia, and the best performance experiences available.

Observers at rehearsals are noticing the enhanced sound of a matched set of brass, even those with no band experience.  In addition to the many compliments on how terrific the band looks with all-silver brass and piccolos, the comments about how the band sounds are just as numerous. “Our line of Conn-Selmer instruments has given us the best possible start, better than we could have ever imagined” continued Dr. Treviño. “Our string and orchestra director, Lucy Manning, is also enjoying using new violins in her string methods class which is a critical component to the entire music education program at Old Dominion”.

Old Dominion University is a growing institution with a current enrollment of approximately 25,000 students. For complete information on the university and music education department, please visit http://al.odu.edu/music/about/.
