Artist's BiographyAndrew Sprung is principal clarinetist of the Jackson (Michigan) Symphony Orchestra, second clarinetist of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra (Traverse City, Michigan), and adjunct instructor of clarinet at Spring Arbor University and Hillsdale College. He has performed extensively in the Midwest with ensembles such as the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Concert Band, Michigan Philharmonic (Plymouth, Michigan), Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, Central Iowa Symphony, Ames (Iowa) Chamber Artists, and several municipal bands in Iowa. As a soloist, Sprung has performed concertos with the Livingston Symphony Orchestra (Brighton, Michigan), Bowling Green State University Wind Symphony, Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra (as a winner of its concerto competition), and the municipal bands of Ames and Mason City, Iowa. His performing career has taken him to Carnegie Hall, Chicagos Orchestra Hall, and venues throughout Europe.
A proponent of new music, Sprung has performed in new music festivals at Bowling Green State University and Heidelberg College. He has commissioned a solo for bass clarinet and electroacoustics and participated in world premieres and North American premieres of compositions ranging from solos to orchestral works.
Sprung maintains a busy schedule as an educator. In addition to his university positions, Sprung teaches private lessons, master classes, and sectionals to high school and middle school students throughout southern Michigan. Current and past teaching appointments include: clarinet sectional instructor at Novi High School, Plymouth-Canton Educational Park, White Lake Middle School and Holt Public Schools; clarinet specialist for the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park Marching Band; woodwind specialist for the South Lyon High School Marching Band; instrumental music instructor at Anthony Wayne Local Schools (Whitehouse, Ohio); and instructor of single reed methods at Bowling Green State University. An active scholar, Sprungs articles have been published in The Clarinet, the official journal of the International Clarinet Association, and translated into Dutch for publication in The Netherlands. In addition to the I.C.A., he holds memberships in honor societies including Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and The Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Sprung holds a Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from Bowling Green State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Iowa State University. He is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Clarinet Performance at Michigan State University. His primary clarinet teachers include Caroline Hartig, Kevin Schempf, Joseph Messenger, and Harvey Von Wald.
