Michael Hackett is Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. An active performer, clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Hackett has served as an adjudicator for the jazz divisions of both the International Trumpet Guild and The National Trumpet Competition. For the last five summer seasons, he has served on the faculty of the Yellowstone Jazz camps in Wyoming.
Dr. Hackett has performed extensively with touring entertainers and pops orchestras across the country backing up artists such as Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, and Perry Como. His playing has been featured in many national television and radio commercials, the movie sound track to “The Aviator,” and many commercially available recordings, including those with Scott Whitfield’s Jazz Orchestra East, three recordings with The Buselli/Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, and “Basically Baker: the Music of David Baker.”
Michael Hackett’s first solo recording entitled “Circles” was released on the Summit Records label in 2005. In spring of 2013, Summit Records released his most recent recording entitled “New Point of View”.
Dr. Hackett received his DM Brass Pedagogy from the prestigious Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and well as a BM and MM in Jazz studies from the same. His principle teachers include trumpet studies with William Adam and John Rommel, and jazz studies with internationally renowned Distinguished Professor of Jazz Studies at Indiana, David Baker.
Dr. Hackett plays on a Conn Vintage 1 Bflat trumpet and flugelhorn, and Bach Stradivarius C and Eflat trumpets.
