Michael Mayhew joined The Cleveland Orchestra as associate principal horn beginning with the 1997-98 season. Before joining The Cleveland Orchestra, Mr. Mayhew served as assistant principal horn of the Syracuse Symphony and had been appointed principal horn there for the 1997-98 season. Earlier, he was a member of Miami’s New World Symphony and preformed as substitute horn with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and with the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera orchestras.
A native of Denton, Texas, Michael Mayhew holds a bachelor of music degree from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and a master of music degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston. Summer programs he has participated in include Kent/Blossom Music, the National Orchestra Institute, the National Repertory Orchestra, and Tanglewood. In addition, he was principal horn of the 1990 American/Soviet Youth Orchestra under the direction of Leonard Slatkin. Mr. Mayhew’s teaches have included Robert Fries, William Ver Mielen, and Richard Solis, now his colleague in the horn section of The Cleveland Orchestra.
