Saxophonist Steve Cole is one of the most celebrated players in contemporary jazz.
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Steve Cole attended Northwestern University, where he explored modern classical music for saxophone under the tutelage of Dr. Fredrick Hemke, and business at the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business where he earned his MBA.
Cole's artist career began in earnest in 1998 when he was signed to Atlantic Records. On his seven subsequent major label releases (Atlantic, Warner Brothers, EMI/Blue Note, Mack Avenue/Artistry) he has posted five #1 national radio hits, sold hundreds of thousands of albums, received the prestigious Prism award for best new artist, and has been featured in numerous publications including Alternative Press, Jazz Times, Radio & Records, and Billboard magazine. In addition to his work as solo artist, Steve has performed, and or recorded, with Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Boz Scaggs, Larry Carlton, Jeff Lorber, Jim Peterik, Freddie Cole, Cyrus Chestnut, KMFDM, as has been a featured soloist with the City of Prague Orchestra, and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Steve is also a founding member of The Sax Pack, a stellar sax trio completed by Marcus Anderson (Prince) and Jeff Kashiwa (The Rippingtons)
In the 15 years since the release of his debut record, saxophonist Steve Cole has traveled full-circle creatively and arrived back home on his new release, “Pulse,” a 10-song set mixing R&B, contemporary jazz, gospel, blues and pop that he produced with fellow saxman David Mann. The new collection surveying Cole’s musical passions showcases the artist’s affinity for infectious melodies, a wall of horns, and soulful grooves.
A dedicated educator, Steve holds the position of Clinical Professor of Music at The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota where he heads the saxophone studio, and teaches courses in music industry management. Prior to his joining the faculty of the University of St. Thomas, Steve held the position of Assistant Professor of Arts, Entertainment, & Media Management at Columbia College Chicago where he was the head of the Music Business program, and Chair of the Music Business Division at the McNally Smith College of Music.An accomplished musician, writer, producer, and educator, Steve maintains a rigorous international touring schedule, is a sought after lecturer and clinician, and is a former two term member of the Board of Governors of the Mid-West chapter of The Recording Academy.
